THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON MA HAS CONFIRMED A  
MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ IN SOUTH DEERFIELD IN  
FRANKLIN COUNTY MASSACHUSETTS ON JULY 7 2015.  
  
A MICROBURST CAUSED DAMAGE AT 452 PM EDT ON HILLSIDE ROAD IN  
SOUTH DEERFIELD...JUST TO THE NORTH OF THE MOUNT SUGARLOAF STATE  
RESERVATION. THE MICROBURST WAS ABOUT 2500 FEET LONG AND UP TO  
1000 FEET WIDE.  
  
SEVERAL TALL PINE TREES WERE SNAPPED OFF AT THE TOP...WHILE  
SEVERAL OTHER LARGE TREES FELL TAKING DOWN POWER LINES. A GAZEBO  
WAS TAKEN DOWN IN THE BACKYARD OF ONE HOME. ALL TREES FELL IN A  
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST TO NORTH-NORTHEAST DIRECTION.  
  
WIND SPEEDS IN THIS MICROBURST WERE ESTIMATED AT 80 TO 90 MPH.

A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW  
AREA  
OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN  
5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL  
WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND  
CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND  
THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO  
DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
